The Purpose of a Small Business Website

Last month in the Sea Change article I recommended considering a range of community college courses to build knowledge and experience. One I mentioned was a website design course so you have the skills either to create your own site or talk from a firm base with a website designer.

I thought I'd run through a few points during the coming newsletters of where to start when considering creating your own website for your new business. The first thing really is to consider what the purpose of the website is to be. What do you want the website to achieve? What is the website's first purpose? When I started creativelybelle.com the main purpose was to provide market location and date details. All my other hopes and plans for the site were second to this initial need. So this was my starting point and made it much easier to focus on the project and to get it made and launched.

This remains one of the key purposes of the site but as my business has reached new phases so has my website. With grow comes new purposes. For instance, with launching on ebay I needed an area that has lots of useful info for customers about doing business with Creatively Belle on ebay - open and clear communication can be one of the best ways to avoid confusion and mixups.

So see your website as a series of phases. Think out the big picture and then bring it back to the immediate. What is the first phase about and what needs to be communicated and how? What is planned for for the big picture? How can this be broken down into phases? What needs to go into phase 2, 3 and 4? What is most important and most achievable? Once again I'm talking about planning but it is through planning that you get to see where you want to go and how to get there. Planning is about envisioning your big picture, asking lots of questions and breaking it all down into smaller, achievable components. Just remember with a plan, it is all do-able!
