Attidtude Determines Altitude

By Belinda Stinson

Watching the news this week I saw an interview with a blind man who flew to Sydney from England. I thought that was amazing. He'd figured out the technology to guide him and had back up with a sighted co-pilot.

When I heard him say "It is attitude that determines altitude" I knew exactly why he had achieved something that was seemingly impossible.

And he's completely right, it is your attitude that determines your altitude.

It is your choice how you approach a situation and what you do with it.

I remember the flat mate of a friend at uni who was a quiet little mouse who had managed to fulfil her dream of getting into set design. Lisa had secured for herself one of the six openings for this really competitive course and she knew that only 4 went on to 2nd year and she wanted to finish the degree successfully.

Lisa realised her quiet and unassuming personality wasn't helping her achieve her desires so she joined the Army Reserves (!!). I remember finding this staggering at the time but when she explained what she wanted out of the Reserves and how she was finding it made so much more sense.

For Lisa the Army Reserve's purpose was to take her out of herself, make her louder and more assertive, build confidence and pay her extra money (all uni students crave extra money).

The army gave Lisa all this and more. She made it to being one of the three who graduated with a BCA in Set Design and got exactly what she wanted.

And here on the news was a blind man who flew across the world in an ultra light. Amazing.

So I took heart from his inspirational actions and words - your attitude determines you altitude.

We all need to be inspired at times when we're making something happen, when we're chasing a dream, building a business, building a home, getting our education, creating arts and crafts, whatever has taken our hearts and minds.

Support from our friends and family makes a huge difference too. It can be simple support like a card, a bunch of flowers, being given a present relating to what we're doing - say for someone making jewellery a jewellery display stand is encouraging, someone into creating an organic garden a magazine on how to do it, that sort of thing. It can be all very simple if you let it.

A couple of weeks ago I got really frustrated during a conversation with a man in management about the care of his park because of his attitude.

He had a really good opportunity to politely talk and listen to a customer but instead he went on the defensive very quickly and ended up having a bad conversation.

I came away from the encounter so very thankful that my days of working with such poor management are over and counting my blessings. 10 days later I'm thinking still about his attitude (and still thankful for my freedom) and how unnecessary it is and how he has choice about it.

If he chose a different attitude then he would have happier conversations and a better life. It seems really simple to me but when I think of people I know just like him I can see how much of a change that would be.

I don't know how long it would take - it could be as quick as a couple of months to break old habits and implement positive new ones. Or it could take years of struggling.

People can climb corporate ladders with bad attitudes but lasting success can't survive in negative environments. Partly because others just don't want to see those people succeed, they may even wish for other things to happen to them.

So what's your choice about attitude and altitude? What's your definition of success? What would make your personal life successful? What would make your working life successful? Does it come down to material things or is it about character, inner peace and satisfaction?

What is in your life that is good enough and what's in your life that isn't good enough?

If something or someone isn't good enough then what do you want to do about that? What can you change that would make it a positive situation?

Remember the advice of to be understood we must seek to understand. If you understand why a situation or person isn't good enough then you have a better chance of figuring out how to change the situation.

If you understand why something is so good then you will have a better chance of bringing that good into other realities to make them better.

That blind pilot found out and understood what it would take to enable him to fly - he found the technology and the people to support him and his dream. His can-do attitude made it happen and he flew to high altitudes.

So can we all if we choose.
