Beads

The beads we use are Czech glass - lampwork, pressmould or crystal.

They are of the highest quality and many are actually hand made using techniques developed over centuries of success.

Making Lampwork Beads

Lampwork beads are made in a layering process by hand.

The core of the bead is made and for the foil and flower beads, silver foil is carefully wrapped around the core. Then, using a hot lamp, thin canes of coloured glass are melted to make the delicate glass flowers. The final layer of glass is then added.

The flower lampwork beads are made in a similar way, but instead of the foil there is layer upon layer of the base colour glass, then the flowers are added and the final layer of glass.

The hot lamp used to melt the glass is similar to a bunson-burner and uses gas.

Findings

We used 9ct gold hooks and .925 sterling silver hooks.

The .925 in sterling silver refers to 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 per cent copper. Some people are allergic to the copper component. If this is the case for you, let us know because we can use either surgical steel hooks or white gold hooks (which have a separate price depending on what we can buy them in for).

The standard hook design we use is called a shepherd hook, meaning it loops through the ear and is open at the back.
