Steve Irwin died today on a shoot on the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia while filming tiger sharks by a stingray sting to his heart as he swam over it.
Best known as the Crocodile Hunter and conservationist and environmentalist it is staggering to think he wasn’t really bullet-proof and human after all. The loss of such a kind hearted, open minded enthusiastic environmentalist is staggering. He represented Australia so very very well.
The Queensland Police Service issued a statement saying Irwin collapsed after being stung at Batt Reef, Low Isles, off Port Douglas about 11am.
It is initially thought that the sting went straight into his heart and death would have been immediate. Even so colleagues performed CPR and the emergency medical helicopter was called in.
I wish his family, friends and colleagues all the best through these difficult times. His Australia Zoo employs over 550 people as is expected to continue, although it might close for a day or so.
