Escaping the Rat Race

Hey there,

I had an interesting conversation with a lady at market on the weekend about escaping the rat race, quality of lifestyle and of how it is possible to do it without taking a great big flying leap, doing it step by step.

I have a jewelry store business. I have an online store, I do jewelry parties, sell at market and have shops I sell into. I enjoy having the different sources of income because they cover each other. I really enjoy the face to face part of it as I get to talk with loads of different people and I like people. I like the online side because of the borderless nature and the internet marketing work.

An online store can be built progressively while you’re working full time so you can minimise the risks of creating a business while building up the alternative income source. You can choose from all manner of business models from designing, making and selling the goods (like me), buying wholesale goods and warehousing them to sell them, dropshipping, selling information (you can buy the rights and/or create your own material).

You can start with eBay and other auction sites, with a blog you sell from and/or a store front. What should it be about? What are your interests, hobbies? Start exploring with something that you find interesting and enjoyable.

How long does it take? Anywhere from a few months to over a few years, depending on how much time you can put into it. If you can put in 40 hours solidly a week then you’ll build quickly. If you have 3 hours a week to start with then it takes longer. But where do you want to be in 2 years time? Take a medium term look at your life and make a personal decision.

I have a series of free articles on my website for you to explore with new ones being added each month with our free newsletter.
