Description
This magical platypus is based on a characterful Tasmanian girl who lives in the Meander River in Deloraine in Tasmania, Australia and I just had to call her after her beautiful home.
Platypuses can be a little shy, especially on the mainland, but this lovely girl is seen regularly giving joy to locals and visitors.
I feel like platypuses are my totem and I’m a little nuts about them. I can usually spot Della within about 10 minutes of arriving at the river and on one of my birthdays I saw five different platypuses – Della, two of her babies (called Puggles) and two males – one by each of the two bridges. I was beside myself with shear excitement but having to keep very quiet so as not to spook them. They were all out foraging for dinner.
Originality
I’ve painted Della the Platypus originally in watercolour paints – Daniel Smith watercolors in the this case – and then printed her in under glaze so I can fire my painting into the porcelain.
If you like something that is exactly the same as the next one, this is not for you. On the other hand, if you value quality artisan designs that are tactile, beautiful and unusual you’ll love these treasures.
Each platypus is unique, giving you something special and captivating. Made in an artisan process over a series of weeks in a sunny coastal studio with multiple kiln firings, each platypus is different and reflects its handmade origin.
Della the Platypus is part of my series of paintings of Australian animals, including koalas, kangaroos, joeys, wallabies, sea birds and wombats.

Meet Della the Platypus
This watercolour painting is based on an actual platypus I visit each year when I go to the Tasmanian Craft Fair in Deloraine. She is a very successful mum and each year I’ve visited she has had two youngsters.
